History of Palm Harbor

The area now known as Palm Harbor was settled by pioneers, farmers and developers who were attracted to the mild climate, beautiful beaches, Gulf Coast waterfront, natural mineral springs and fertile soil. A post office was established under the name of Bay St. Joseph in 1878, but the name was changed in 1888 to Southerland. That same year, the railroad came through the town. At the turn of the century, the town was home to two luxury hotels and a college. In 1925, the name was changed to Palm Harbor.

The downtown area today features a historic district that incorporates buildings from the early 20th century and includes venues for entertainment, restaurants and retail shops. Several festivals throughout the year attract residents and visitors alike.

Things to Do in Palm Harbor

No matter what your interest, there is something fun to do in Palm Harbor and nearby communities. You may enjoy outdoor activities like strolling along the beach or hiking through one of the nearby nature preserves like Weedon Island on Tampa Bay. Water activities include fishing in the Gulf, swimming and boating. Honeymoon Island, a Florida state park, is a popular spot for both day trips and overnight stays. Bird watching, hiking, snorkeling and swimming are favorite activities. The Gulf waters deposit shells on the beaches along the island’s shoreline, a favorite area to find unusual marine shells.

The Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce sponsors several events each year including the Fine Arts and Crafts Festival in December. Local artists display their works for public viewing and sale. For history buffs, the Pinellas County Heritage Society supports Heritage Village, an interactive museum with historic buildings, a native plant trail, activities and a gift shop. Exhibits feature topics that highlight aspects of the region’s history. Hands-on activities demonstrate how early pioneers used local materials to make thatched roofs, weave cloth and cure foods.
