Whether you are leaving your home for just a few days or a few weeks, it is important to take certain measures to ensure you and your property are fully protected. With that in mind, here are a few tips for keeping your Dunedin home safe while you are traveling. Implementing measures to protect your home can save you a lot of money and stress later.
Have Your HVAC System Inspected
Keep your maintenance schedule. Have an HVAC contractor fully check out the HVAC system, and perform any maintenance that is required before you leave. Not only will this keep the system running efficiently while you are away, but it will also allow your contractor to make any repairs that could potentially cause a problem in your absence. Before you leave, reduce the thermostat by about 15 degrees. There is no need to have the heat at normal settings if no one is home. It is also a good idea to leave a key and your contractor’s contact information with a close friend or neighbor in case of emergencies.
Secure Your Home
Lock all doors and windows and if you have a security system, remember to set it before leaving. Don’t discuss your plans publicly, especially on the Internet, and dispose of packages for expensive items carefully to avoid advertising items you bought.
Turn off Appliances and Electronics
Turn off unnecessary lights, appliances, and electronics to reduce energy costs while you’re away. Unplug electronics that still draw power in the “off” mode and turn the water heater off, down or to “vacation” mode. Put a few lights and a radio or TV on a timer system so your home looks occupied, and consider investing in a few inexpensive Internet-connected cameras so you can monitor your home remotely.
Ask a Neighbor for Help
Have a trusted neighbor or friend keep an eye on your home, including doing things like collecting the mail and newspapers, watering plants, or even parking a car in your driveway.
