4 Tips for Effectively Reducing Cooling Costs

For Largo, Florida, residents, a quality air conditioning system is essential, but many may be overspending just to keep their homes cool. The long period of hot weather usually means a rise in energy bills, but there are measures you can implement that are very effective in reducing cooling costs.

Turn Up the Thermostat

It may seem counterintuitive to increase the settings on your thermostat when the weather is in the high 90s. However, increasing the thermostat setting can result in savings. Higher settings are recommended for when you are away from home for eight hours or more, and when you are asleep. Whether you have a manual or programmable thermostat, setting your thermostat according to these guidelines is said to be very effective for maximizing AC efficiency.

Use a Fan

Fans help to keep you cool by distributing the cool air. Fans do not actually cool rooms. They work only by cooling the body with the circulating cooled air. Using a fan along with your air conditioner will allow you to increase the thermostat setting, and reduce reliance on your air conditioner.

Watch Thermostat Location

Your thermostat should be located preferably in an interior hallway and away from dust, drafts or direct heat. Items such as televisions, computers, and lamps give off heat, which can prevent your thermostat from doing its job properly. The result will be false readings which will cause the unit to cycle on and off unnecessarily and increase your energy bill.

Consider System Condition

Your air conditioning system could be in need of repair. Depending on the age and condition, it might be a good idea to upgrade to a modern and more efficient unit. The cost of a new unit might tempt you to try to hold on to the old unit, but inefficient operation and the need for frequent repairs will make that a more costly decision in the long run.

Routine maintenance is also important in helping your air conditioner to perform more efficiently so that you can reduce cooling costs. Contact United Air Conditioning at 727-470-6803 for more information about our effective AC solutions, or to schedule an appointment.
